How to Choose Gym Leggings That Pass the Squat Test

Fabric weight, waistband height, seam placement and pockets decide whether leggings work. How to test opacity properly and what to check before you buy in the UAE.

Four things decide whether a pair of leggings works: fabric weight, waistband height, seam placement and whether they have real pockets. Aim for a knit around 220 to 280 gsm, a wide high waistband, and a seam that runs around the leg rather than across the seat.

The only test that means anything is squatting in them in front of a mirror. Everything else is guesswork, including the stretch-over-your-hand test the internet keeps recommending.

How do you actually test opacity?

Wear them and squat. That is the whole method.

The common advice is to stretch the fabric over your hand and see if the skin shows. It is close to useless, because it tells you what the fabric does under uneven point stretch rather than what it does across the seat under body weight, which is a completely different load.

Put them on. Squat below parallel in front of a mirror, then hinge forward. Look at the seat and the back of the thigh. If you can see skin tone, the seam of your underwear, or the outline of a pocket bag, the knit is too light for training.

Do it under bright light, ideally daylight, because gym lighting is dim and forgiving in a way your changing room at home will not be. Do it before you take the tags off, since that is the one window where a return is still possible.

What fabric weight should you look for?

Between roughly 220 and 280 gsm for a training legging.

Below about 200 gsm you are in the yoga and lounge range, where the fabric is thin enough to go sheer as soon as it stretches over a curve. Those are perfectly good leggings for stretching and walking and not for squatting.

Above 300 gsm they will be reliably opaque and noticeably warm, which in a UAE summer is a real cost even indoors. The sweet spot for training here is a mid weight knit with a high elastane content, since elastane is what gives recovery, meaning the fabric snaps back rather than bagging at the knee by week three.

Most brands do not print gsm on the label. In its absence, the practical proxies are how the fabric feels between your fingers, whether it has a matt rather than shiny finish, and the squat test.

Where should the seams be?

Around the leg, never straight across the seat.

A centre back seam that runs vertically through the middle of the seat is the most common opacity failure point, because that is where the fabric is stretched hardest and the seam allowance itself thins under it. A gusset at the crotch removes the four way seam junction that causes both chafing and wear.

Look for flatlock seams. They lie flush against the skin rather than standing proud, and standing proud is what rubs on a long session or a run.

Contour seaming that curves around the leg does two things at once: it puts the joins where the fabric is under less tension, and it shapes the leg without needing the fabric to be tighter. Our Motion Pocket Leggings at AED 179 are built this way, in S to XXL.

Does the waistband matter that much?

More than any other single feature.

A high, wide waistband distributes tension across a broad band of your midsection, so it stays where you put it through hinging, jumping and floor work. A narrow or low waistband concentrates that tension in a strip, which is why it rolls down the moment you bend forward.

Two failure modes to check for. Gaping at the back when you bend means the rise is wrong for you rather than the size. Digging in at the front when you sit means the band has no give in it, and that will not improve with wear.

Avoid a drawcord unless you know you want one. Under a barbell or on the floor, a knot at the front of the waistband is a pressure point.

Are pockets worth paying for?

If you train with your phone, they are the difference between a legging you reach for and one you do not.

Placement decides everything. A side pocket sitting on the thigh holds a phone against the largest muscle in your leg, where the weight is supported and does not swing. A back waistband pocket puts the same weight at the top of the band, which pulls it down over a session.

The pocket needs to be deep enough that a large phone does not sit proud of the opening, and cut from the same fabric rather than a mesh bag, since a mesh bag shows through under stretch.

Small point that matters in this climate: a phone in a thigh pocket gets warm. In a UAE summer, an hour of training with a device against your leg is enough to trigger a heat warning on some phones.

What about sizing?

Buy your true size, and judge fit by whether you adjust them.

Leggings are meant to be snug, and the instinct to size up for comfort backfires. A pair that is slightly too big slides down, which means you pull them up between sets, and that is the clearest signal you have the wrong size rather than the wrong pair.

Too small shows up as digging at the hem, waistband discomfort when seated, and the fabric going sheer simply because it is stretched past what it was designed for. A legging can be perfectly opaque in the correct size and see through one size down.

If you are between sizes, size to your hips rather than your waist for training leggings, since the seat is where the stretch demand is highest.

What to wear on top

Fitted, and long enough that you stop thinking about it.

A cropped or fitted top works with a high waistband because the two meet without a gap that opens when you move. Our Contour Cap Tee at AED 139 sits at that length, and the Breeze Tee at AED 129 is the lighter option for summer sessions.

If coverage is a requirement rather than a preference, the fabric and cut questions change and modest activewear in the UAE covers those specifically. For how the leggings fit into a full rotation, see womens gym wear.

For care: cold wash, no fabric softener, hang dry. Softener coats synthetic fibres and kills both the wicking and the elastane recovery, which is the fastest way to turn a good pair of leggings into a baggy one.

Common questions

Put them on, squat deep in front of a mirror, and look. If skin tone or underwear shows through the stretched fabric across the seat, they are not. Stretching them over your hand tells you very little.

Around 220 to 280 gsm for opaque training leggings. Lighter than that and the fabric goes sheer under stretch. Heavier is more opaque but hotter, which matters in the UAE.

For training, generally yes. A high wide waistband stays put through hinging and jumping, where a low one rolls. It is a fit decision rather than a style one.

If you train with your phone, yes. A side pocket sits against the thigh where the weight does not pull the waistband down, unlike a back pocket.

Snug everywhere with no gaping at the waist and no digging at the hem. If you are pulling them up during a session, they are too big, not too small.
