Boxing for Women in the UAE: How to Start
Where to train, what to wear, what to buy and what actually happens in your first month. A practical starting guide for women boxing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

You need three things to start: hand wraps, gloves, and kit you can actually move in. Everything else is the gym's problem, not yours. In the UAE that first purchase runs about AED 250, and the honest recommendation is 12oz gloves and 450cm wraps.
Womens boxing has grown fast here, and most gyms in Dubai and Abu Dhabi now run beginner classes that are majority women. This is what the first month actually looks like and what to buy before it.
Is boxing a good workout for women?
Yes, and for reasons that have nothing to do with fighting.
Boxing is one of the few workouts that trains the aerobic system, coordination and upper body at the same time. A class burns roughly 400 to 700 calories an hour depending on intensity, and because it alternates hard rounds with rest, the effect carries on after you stop.
The part people underestimate is skill. Every session gives you something specific to get better at, which is a very different experience from counting reps. That is why boxing retains people who have quit every gym membership they have ever had.
It will not make you bulky. The resistance involved is a glove and your own bodyweight. What it does build is shoulders, back and a genuinely strong core, because rotation is where punching power comes from.
What should women wear to a boxing class?
Something close fitting on top and something you can pivot in on the bottom.
Loose t-shirts are the common first mistake. When you drop into a guard, loose fabric bunches at the shoulder and gets in the way of your own hands. A fitted tee or a tank sits still. Our Contour Cap Tee at AED 139 is cut for exactly this, and the Breeze Tee at AED 129 is the lighter option for summer.
On the bottom, leggings beat shorts for boxing specifically, because footwork means pivoting on the ball of your foot and shorts ride up when you do. Motion Pocket Leggings at AED 179 run S to XXL and hold a phone while you train.
Bring a supportive sports bra, and bring more water than you think. A boxing hall in a UAE summer is a serious heat test even with air conditioning. There is a fuller breakdown in what to wear for boxing training.
What gloves should a woman buy?
12oz for most, 14oz if you are taller or planning to spar.
Glove weight is padding weight, and it tracks bodyweight rather than hand size, because bodyweight is what sits behind the punch. For a woman training two or three times a week on bags and pads, 12oz is the size that fits properly and stays comfortable through a full session.
The Haawi H-1 at AED 199 comes in 8, 10, 12 and 14oz and is built for this exact use. Haawi means amateur in Arabic, in the original sense of doing something for love rather than pay.
If you already know you want to spar, most gyms require 16oz for partner work, which is the Mulakim M-1 at AED 379 in premium leather. Full detail on sizing is in what oz boxing gloves to buy.
Do you have to wrap your hands?
Yes. This is the one thing that is genuinely not optional.
Wraps do two jobs. They compress the small bones of the hand so they move as one unit under impact, and they support the wrist so it cannot fold on a bad angle. The injuries that end people's boxing are almost all wrist and knuckle, and almost all preventable.
They also protect the glove. Sweat is what destroys padding, and wraps absorb most of it before it reaches the lining. A AED 49 set of Laaf hand wraps protects a AED 199 glove.
Buy 450cm, which is around 180 inches, for most adult hands. If you have never wrapped before, coaches will show you on day one, and our step by step guide covers a wrap that holds for a full session.
How do you find the right gym?
Ask three questions before you book, in this order.
Is there a beginners class, or just an open floor? An open floor with no structure is intimidating and you will learn nothing. A beginner course with a fixed curriculum is worth paying more for.
Are there women only sessions or female coaches? Several gyms across Dubai and Abu Dhabi run them. If it matters to you, ask directly rather than guessing from photographs on a website.
Can I do a trial before committing? Almost every gym here says yes. Take it, and take it at the time of day you would actually train, because a 7am class and a 7pm class can feel like different gyms.
Session pricing and what to look for is covered properly in where to train boxing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
What does the first month look like?
Week one is confusing and you will be sore in places you did not expect, mostly shoulders and obliques.
By week two the basic stance stops feeling artificial. By week four you will hit a pad and feel the difference between a punch thrown with your arm and one thrown from the floor through your hips, which is the moment most people get genuinely hooked.
Nobody will ask you to spar. Sparring in a properly run gym is opt in, usually months away, and plenty of people box for years without ever doing it.
Start with two sessions a week rather than four. The limiting factor early on is not fitness, it is the connective tissue in your hands and wrists adapting to impact, and that takes weeks regardless of how fit you already are.
What to buy before your first class
- Laaf hand wraps, 450cm, AED 49. Non negotiable, and yours rather than the gym's.
- Haawi H-1 gloves, 12oz, AED 199. Buy after your trial session if the gym lends a pair, but buy your own before session three.
- Contour Cap Tee, AED 139, and Motion Pocket Leggings, AED 179. Fitted, breathable, and they survive a wash cycle every session.
That comes to AED 566 for a full kit, which clears free UAE shipping and should last you well past the first year.
On kit specifically, the sizing advice most shops give is written for a different hand. Boxing gear for women covers glove sizing by hand rather than by label, and what to do when a wrap is too long.
Common questions
Hand wraps, gloves, and clothes you can move and sweat in. That is the whole list for the first three months. Most gyms lend gloves for a trial session, but wraps are personal and cost AED 49.
12oz suits most women for bag work, pads and classes. Go 14oz if you are taller, heavier or expect to spar within the year. Glove weight tracks bodyweight, not hand size.
Yes. Several gyms in Dubai and Abu Dhabi run women only sessions, and some have women only training floors with female coaches. Ask before booking rather than assuming from the website.
No. Boxing is largely conditioning work with light resistance. It builds shoulders, back and core definition rather than mass, and burns 400 to 700 calories an hour while doing it.
No. Most people who box never spar. Bag work, pad work and technique classes are a complete training practice on their own, and sparring is always opt in.
