Dubai has more boxing gyms than it has places to buy boxing gear. That sounds like a small problem until you are standing in a mall sports shop holding the only 16oz glove in the building, in a colour you would not choose, at a price that assumes you did not look.
There are three ways to buy here, and they are good at different things.
The three places Dubai sells boxing gear
General sports retailers. The big chains in Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and Ibn Battuta carry entry level gloves, wraps, skipping ropes and the occasional bag. You can hold the product, which is the real advantage. The range thins out quickly above beginner level, and a specific glove weight or a leather pair is often something they will order rather than something on the shelf.
Gym pro shops. Most of the established boxing gyms keep a small rail of gloves and wraps near reception. The stock is narrow, but the advice is the best you will get anywhere, because the person selling it watches people train in that gear every day. UAE online brands. This is where the range lives, and where the price is honest, because nobody is paying mall rent out of your glove. The trade off is that you cannot hold the product first, which is a sizing question rather than a quality one, and it is solvable. What to check before you buy anything in Dubai

- The cuff. A short, soft cuff lets the wrist fold on a heavy bag. A long cuff with a proper closure is what stops that.
- Stitching at the thumb. It is the first seam to go, and it is the cheapest thing for a factory to shortcut.
