The boxing gifts for kids that get used, from AED 49 hand wraps to a first pair of 8 oz gloves, with the sizes to check and what to leave for the club.

The best boxing gifts for kids are the ones they will use at every class: their own pair of hand wraps in a short 250 cm length, and, if they already train, a first pair of small gloves that fit. For a child who has not started yet, the best gift is a trial class at a good junior club, with wraps to take along. Everything else, headguards included, can wait until a coach asks for it.

This guide is for parents, grandparents and anyone else buying for a young boxer in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or anywhere in the UAE, whether it is for a birthday, Eid or the winter break.

What is the best boxing gift for a child?

It depends on one question: does the child already train?

If they already go to a club, buy kit that is theirs alone. Their own wraps and gloves feel like a real step up from borrowed kit, and they are the two pieces they will reach for at every session.

If they are just curious, do not buy a full kit yet. Book a trial class, buy a pair of wraps, and let them find out whether they love it. A child who keeps going will tell you within a month, and the gloves can follow then, in the size the coach recommends.

If they practise at home with you, consider a gift for both of you: a pair of focus pads for the adult, so the child has something to hit.

Whichever applies, the rule is the same as for any boxing kit. It has to fit. A glove that is too big is not a safer glove, it is a worse one.

Check three things before you buy

A few minutes of checking saves buying the wrong thing.

  1. Ask the club what it uses. Clubs differ on glove weight for younger children and on whether they want children in their own kit. One message to the coach answers both.
  2. Know the hand, not just the age. Ages are a rough guide. A tall nine year old and a small eleven year old can need the same glove, and the coach will have seen your child's hands.
  3. Find out whether they spar. Nearly all young beginners do not. If your child does not spar, a headguard is not a gift they need.

What a good junior class looks like, and when children usually start, is in kids boxing in the UAE. Everything FYYTR makes in the sizes that fit children is on one page: the junior boxing kit.

Gifts under AED 100

Hand wraps. The single most-used piece of boxing kit, and the one children almost never own. Laaf hand wraps in 250 cm are AED 49 and are the length made for smaller hands; an adult length leaves a child's hand too bulky for the glove. Wraps sit against the skin and absorb sweat, so they should never be shared. Two pairs means there is always a clean one, which is the gift parents end up thanking themselves for.

Sweat towels. The FYYTR sweat towels are AED 49 for a pack of two, one black and one white. They are not a children's product, they are simply a towel, and a boxing hall in a UAE summer is warm enough that every child should have one in the bag.

Both are safe choices for an aunt, an uncle or a family friend who does not know the child's size, because there is no glove size to guess.

A first pair of boxing gloves

For a child who already trains, their own gloves are the gift that feels biggest.

The Haawi H-1 in 8 oz is AED 249 and fits most children from about eight to twelve for bag and pad work. It is the same glove as the adult sizes, with the same layered padding, in a weight that suits a smaller hand. The 8 oz comes in pink, black, burgundy and grey, which matters more to a ten year old than any spec.

The fit test is the same at every age. Over wraps, the fingers should reach the end of the glove without pressing into it, and the wrist should stay straight when the child makes a fist. A glove that slides around the hand bends the wrist on impact, which is how young boxers hurt their hands. That is the reason never to buy a bigger glove for a child to grow into.

For younger children, ask the club which weight its junior classes use before you buy; FYYTR's lightest glove is the 8 oz. More on weights is in what oz boxing gloves should you buy.

Gloves and wraps together

Gloves and wraps are the natural pair, and Shopify takes AED 10 off at checkout when both are in the cart.

A gift for the parent too: pads for practice at home

Many children want to practise between classes, and the best way is pad work with a parent.

Murabbi Pro Trainer focus pads are AED 189. The curved face catches the punch and the padding absorbs it, which makes them forgiving for an adult learning to hold. Murabbi coaching paddles at AED 199 are lighter and quicker to move, good for short accuracy games. These are for the adult's hands, not the child's.

Keep home sessions to what the coach already teaches: the jab, the cross, simple combinations, short rounds and no punches thrown back. How to hold pads at a child's height, what to call and a 20 minute session plan are all in kids boxing at home.

When a headguard makes sense as a gift

Only when the coach has started your child in supervised sparring, and only once you know the size.

Technique classes have no contact to the head, so a headguard bought too early just sits in a cupboard. Once sparring starts, a properly fitted headguard is essential and most clubs require one. The Mulakim M-1 full protection headguard in S is AED 399, genuine leather with cheek protection, which gives the most coverage while a young boxer is still learning to keep their hands up. The open face headguard in S/M is AED 379 for a wider view in technical sparring.

Measure around the head just above the eyebrows before ordering, and check that it sits level and does not move when the child shakes their head. Fitting is covered in boxing headgear: how to choose, fit and use it.

What not to buy

  • Adult gloves to grow into. Too big means a bent wrist on every punch.
  • Adult-length wraps. A 450 cm wrap makes a small hand too bulky for its glove.
  • A headguard before sparring. It is not needed for technique classes and is hard to size by guesswork.
  • Anything that turns into sparring at home. Play sparring between siblings needs a coach, a proper floor and full protective kit, none of which a living room has.

The short version

For a child who trains: 250 cm wraps and an 8 oz glove in their favourite colour. For a child who is curious: a trial class and a pair of wraps. For the family: a pair of focus pads so practice can happen at home. And for everyone who boxes, gift ideas for adults are in gifts for boxers.

Children and teenagers need plenty of activity every day, and the WHO recommends at least an average of 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity. A sport they love, in kit that fits, is one of the easiest ways to get there.

Common questions

Their own hand wraps in a short 250 cm length, and, if they already train, a pair of small training gloves such as the 8 oz Haawi H-1, which fits most children from about eight to twelve. Both get used at every class.

Many children from about eight to twelve fit an 8 oz glove. For younger children, ask the club which glove weight its junior classes use before you buy, and do not buy a bigger glove for them to grow into.

Only once their coach has started supervised sparring. Technique classes have no contact to the head, so a headguard is not needed, and it has to be fitted to the child's head rather than guessed.

A trial class at a well-run junior club is the best first gift. Kit can wait until they have been a few times; a pair of hand wraps is the one piece worth having from the first session.
